The foundation came into existence based on several fund-raising events that were initiated by friends of Florence Naduk, a Ugandan woman who lives in the Netherlands. When her sister died of AIDS and her four children were left orphaned, events were initiated to provide accommodation to the girls who were left homeless. As time progressed, projects were extended to the village of Matany, where Florence's cousins live. In March 2003, the foundation "Akisiom" officially came into existence.

The foundation aims to give all orphaned children of Matany a chance to keep on going to school by providing them with educational tools, beds and mattresses, and uniforms.
